The MED III – Emergency Casualty Care for Civilians course is an advanced, performance-driven medical training program designed to prepare responders to manage life-threatening medical emergencies in high-stress, real-world environments. While MED III builds naturally upon foundational knowledge taught in NOVA’s MED I (First Aid, CPR & AED) and MED II (Advanced First Aid / Stop the Bleed) courses, it is structured so that students may also enroll as a standalone class. All core medical concepts from MED I and MED II are incorporated and expanded, ensuring a complete continuum of lifesaving skills regardless of prior training pathway.

MED III immerses students in both rigorous instruction and hands-on practice of critical medical interventions, culminating in a full-scale scenario-based training evolution that simulates a major casualty event. This final evolution tests students’ ability to apply learned skills under stress, reinforcing confidence and competency in emergency casualty management.

Training Objectives & Key Topics Covered:

Foundational Concepts from MED I (First Aid, CPR & AED)
Students will review and apply essential civilian responder skills, including:
-
High-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for adults, children, and infants
-
Automated External Defibrillator (AED) operation and troubleshooting
-
Relief of choking in adult, child, and infant victims
-
Principles of the American Heart Association’s “Chain of Survival”
-
Basic patient assessment and emergency scene awareness

Expanded Competencies from MED II (Advanced First Aid / Stop the Bleed)
Building on basic lifesaving skills, MED III reinforces and expands the following:
-
Rapid casualty assessment using the M-A-R-C-H framework
-
Recognition and response to life-threatening bleeding
-
Application of tourniquets to control serious extremity bleeding
-
Use of emergency trauma dressings and hemostatic agents
-
Wound packing for junctional areas (neck, shoulder, groin, armpits)

Airway maintenance techniques and obstruction management
Advanced MED III-Specific Topics
In addition to foundational and intermediate skills, this course covers advanced casualty care concepts, including:
-
Airway management and adjunct placement (Nasopharyngeal Airway)
-
Chest injury management, including application of chest seals for open chest wounds
-
Recognition and treatment of head injury, shock, and hypothermia
-
Strategies for caring for casualties in dynamic and threatening environments
-
Pediatric emergency care considerations

Course Format & Experience
This eight-hour course blends classroom instruction, skill stations, and real-world practice. Students will refine decision-making and hands-on proficiency through progressive exercises that build from controlled skills work to comprehensive casualty scenarios. The final training evolution simulates a major casualty event, requiring students to integrate assessment, control of life-threatening conditions, movement to safety, and prioritization of care in a time-sensitive environment.
Who Should Attend
MED III is ideal for individuals seeking advanced capability in emergency casualty response, including security professionals, event staff, first responders, community leaders, or any civilian responder seeking to elevate their lifesaving skills beyond basic first aid.
